Stanley Rainey was born in Belfast. He was educated at RBAI and QUB and saw service with the Royal Engineers near the end of World War Two.
He has been painting since the age of 10 in oils and watercolour. He is largely self taught, and by long association with a number of professional artists.
He is an associate member of the Art Society of Ulster, and has won a prize in one of the Society's annual exhibitions. He has exhibited widely in Northern Ireland, Scotland and the Republic of Ireland and his paintings have been featured in a number of First Trust Bank calendars.
He tries simply to "hold the mirror to nature", and is interested in movement, water and reflections and as a result has been inspired by the River Lagan, Strangford Lough, yachting and the Irish landscape in general.
